We may be frustrated, disappointed, lonely, overwhelmed—or feeling several things at once. This resource is designed to help you explore the language of your inner experience and discover new ways to put what you're feeling into words.\r\n\r\n##### Why the Words We Use Matter\r\nMany of us reach for a handful of basic words—“good,” “bad,” “sad,” or “stressed”—to describe how we feel. But our inner experiences are rarely that simple. Using more precise words can help us better understand what’s happening in our minds and bodies—what we sometimes call our emotions, or energy in motion.\r\n\r\nFeeling words can also open us to one another. When someone asks how we’re doing and we say, “I’m fine, thanks,” we may unintentionally put up a wall. But saying “I’m frustrated” or “I’m feeling hopeful” gives the other person a way into our experience by offering a feeling they may recognize and relate to themselves.\r\n\r\n##### What Happens When We Name What We Feel \r\nResearch on affect labeling suggests that putting feelings into words can reduce their intensity. Naming an emotion can create some space between what we’re experiencing and how we respond to it. It can also help us distinguish a physical sensation from the story we’re telling ourselves about it. A tight chest can be alarming, for example, but recognizing it as fear, anxiety, or anticipation gives us more information about what we’re experiencing and what we might need in the moment, becoming our first step in addressing that need.\r\n\r\n##### How to Expand Your Emotional Vocabulary \r\nBuilding a richer feeling vocabulary takes practice. The accompanying feeling-word list can help you move beyond the first word that comes to mind. Keep it somewhere accessible and return to it when you notice a feeling that is difficult to name. Start with what you notice in your body, then use the list to identify the broader feeling that resonates and explore the words beneath it until you find one that feels true to your experience.",{"assetUrl":7},"https://assets-wellmind.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/system/uploads/fae/file/asset/2/Wellmind-FeelingWords.pdf","Download PDF","https://google.com","File",null,"Resources | Feeling Words | Wellmind",{"id":14,"alt":15,"caption":11,"assetUrl":16,"assetUrlXs":17,"assetUrlSm":18,"assetUrlMd":19,"assetUrlLg":20,"assetUrlXl":21,"assetUrlXxl":22,"width":23,"height":24},"3","White Wellmind logo on bright red background.","https://www.wellmind.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/3/Wellmind_OpenGraph.png","https://www.wellmind.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/3/xs_Wellmind_OpenGraph.png","https://www.wellmind.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/3/sm_Wellmind_OpenGraph.png","https://www.wellmind.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/3/md_Wellmind_OpenGraph.png","https://www.wellmind.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/3/lg_Wellmind_OpenGraph.png","https://www.wellmind.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/3/xl_Wellmind_OpenGraph.png","https://www.wellmind.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/3/xxl_Wellmind_OpenGraph.png",1200,630,{"id":26,"alt":27,"caption":11,"assetUrl":28,"assetUrlXs":29,"assetUrlSm":30,"assetUrlMd":31,"assetUrlLg":32,"assetUrlXl":33,"assetUrlXxl":34,"width":35,"height":23},"35","A young girl with curly hair furrows her brow and pouts, conveying a strong expression of frustration or discontent.","https://www.wellmind.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/35/Wellmind_feeling_words.jpg","https://www.wellmind.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/35/xs_Wellmind_feeling_words.jpg","https://www.wellmind.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/35/sm_Wellmind_feeling_words.jpg","https://www.wellmind.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/35/md_Wellmind_feeling_words.jpg","https://www.wellmind.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/35/lg_Wellmind_feeling_words.jpg","https://www.wellmind.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/35/xl_Wellmind_feeling_words.jpg","https://www.wellmind.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/35/xxl_Wellmind_feeling_words.jpg",1800,"2026-09-21T16:35:18Z","feeling-words","Finding the Language for How You Feel","Feeling Words",[41,43,57,71],{"title":39,"slug":37,"tagline":38,"image":42},{"id":26,"alt":27,"caption":11,"assetUrl":28,"assetUrlXs":29,"assetUrlSm":30,"assetUrlMd":31,"assetUrlLg":32,"assetUrlXl":33,"assetUrlXxl":34,"width":35,"height":23},{"title":44,"slug":45,"tagline":46,"image":47},"Defense Mechanisms","defense-mechanisms","Understanding Our Protective Patterns",{"id":48,"alt":49,"caption":11,"assetUrl":50,"assetUrlXs":51,"assetUrlSm":52,"assetUrlMd":53,"assetUrlLg":54,"assetUrlXl":55,"assetUrlXxl":56,"width":35,"height":23},"199","A woman and teen child sit on a couch.
