Growing up, I never heard of the two words, "mental health," nor did I see anyone speak about mental health. I did my best to coast through life and blend in with various social groups, and I was taught to ignore uncomfortable feelings and experiences. My younger self didn’t allow myself to internalize and explore my bi-cultural experience because it was difficult. As a result, I ultimately struggled in understanding what it meant to be my authentic self. Through a series of life stage transitions and understanding the importance of mental health, I accepted the wonders and complexities of life endeavors. Life is filled with multifaceted events that help build resilience and growth. My individual and collective experiences shaped my values and goals. Therefore, there is not a single identifier that can describe who I am. I am a Korean American, daughter of immigrants, sister, friend, mother, co-worker, supporter, therapist, and so much more.
When I was younger, I didn’t know how to communicate my feelings and felt frustrated by potential mischaracterization. After I had my first child, I had a difficult time navigating through postpartum depression. I started asking questions and researching mental health while finding virtual support groups. Through this process, I realized that I had never been alone in my personal issues. When I was pregnant with my second child, I went back to school for social work to become a mental health professional to serve people in my community to help navigate through anxiety, depression, grief, and intergenerational traumas.
Every person’s experience is his or her own. I want to know you and your story. I strive to be collaborative because therapy requires teamwork. Let's face it: therapy is hard and requires a lot of hard work, internally and externally. I aim to create a safe and non-judgmental space where you can feel vulnerable with your thoughts and feelings.
It is such an honor for me to listen to your story, to process those hardships and joys in your life, and to be part of your healing. We are all imperfect people, but we don’t have to be imperfect alone. I’m here to be an active listener, to empathetically understand you, and to support you in your journey.
